Personal Shopper (2017)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Personal Shopper is a haunting psychological drama written and directed by Olivier Assayas that blurs the boundaries between grief, identity, and the supernatural. Set against the stylish yet isolating backdrop of Paris, the film follows Maureen, portrayed by Kristen Stewart, a withdrawn young woman working as a personal shopper for a high-profile celebrity.

Maureen’s life is defined by emotional limbo. While she spends her days selecting couture pieces and luxury accessories for her demanding employer, her inner world is consumed by mourning. She recently lost her twin brother, Lewis, to a heart condition they both share genetically. Bound by a childhood pact that whoever died first would send a sign from beyond, Maureen lingers in Paris, waiting for proof that death is not the end.

Her fragile emotional state becomes further destabilized when she begins receiving mysterious text messages from an unknown sender. What initially seems like a cruel intrusion slowly evolves into something more ambiguous and unsettling. The messages push her toward actions that challenge her moral boundaries and sense of self, drawing her into a tense psychological spiral.

With minimalist storytelling and an atmosphere thick with existential dread, Personal Shopper explores themes of modern alienation, digital intimacy, and the porous line between the material and spiritual worlds. Anchored by a restrained yet deeply vulnerable performance from Kristen Stewart, the film transforms a ghost story into a meditation on loss, desire, and the search for connection in a hyper-connected age.
