Plot Summary

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is set in 18th-century France, where Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw) is born with an extraordinary sense of smell but completely devoid of any other human sensibility.

Capable of detecting even the faintest scent, Grenouille becomes obsessed with capturing and preserving smells. His unique gift, however, is paired with emotional emptiness and social isolation, turning his talent into a dangerous fixation.

When Grenouille realizes that he himself has no personal scent, his fragile sense of purpose collapses. He becomes convinced that the only way to exist meaningfully in society is to create a fragrance so powerful that it will make others perceive him as human—worthy of love and admiration.

To achieve this, Grenouille descends into madness, believing that the purest essences can only be extracted from young and beautiful women. What follows is a chilling journey of obsession, murder, and artistic extremity.

The film portrays the tragic downfall of a man who defines existence solely through sensation, offering a dark meditation on identity, desire, and the monstrous consequences of genius unbound by morality.
