Story Overview

Caramel is a warm and intimate ensemble drama set in the vibrant streets of Beirut, where the lives of five women intertwine inside a small neighborhood beauty salon. Directed by and starring Nadine Labaki, the film explores friendship, love, and the quiet struggles of everyday life through moments of humor, vulnerability, and solidarity.

Layale (Nadine Labaki) is secretly involved with Rabih, a married man whose promises keep her trapped in an uncertain relationship. Meanwhile, Nisrine (Yasmine Al Masri) anxiously prepares for her upcoming wedding, fearing that the truth about her past may jeopardize her future. Rima (Joanna Moukarzel) works at the salon and finds herself increasingly drawn to a beautiful female client, struggling to reconcile her feelings with social expectations.

Jamale (Gisele Aouad) refuses to accept the passage of time and the fading of youth, clinging to dreams of recognition and admiration. Rose (Sihame Haddad), the quiet seamstress next door, has spent much of her life caring for her ailing sister, sacrificing her own chances at love and independence.
