Plot Summary

By The Sea is an intimate and visually restrained drama that explores the emotional distance and unspoken tensions within a long-married couple struggling to reconnect. Set against the sun-washed Mediterranean coast of France in the 1970s, the film follows Roland and Vanessa as they retreat to a quiet seaside town in hopes of healing the fractures in their relationship.

Roland, a successful but increasingly disillusioned writer portrayed by Brad Pitt, attempts to mask his frustrations with charm and alcohol, while Vanessa, played by Angelina Jolie, drifts through her days weighed down by grief, depression, and emotional withdrawal. Their marriage is defined less by open conflict than by silence, avoidance, and unresolved pain.

Their isolation is gradually disrupted by the presence of newlyweds Lea and Francois, whose youthful intimacy and openness act as a mirror to Roland and Vanessa’s own emotional paralysis. As voyeuristic curiosity turns into reluctant self-confrontation, buried wounds begin to surface, forcing the couple to face the true source of their disconnection.

Elegantly paced and visually evocative, By The Sea is less concerned with plot than with mood and psychological realism. The film presents marriage as a fragile emotional landscape shaped by loss, desire, and the difficulty of genuine communication, offering a quiet yet unsettling meditation on love strained by time and silence.
