Story Overview

Set in 1781, Amadeus tells the gripping story of rivalry, envy, and genius through the eyes of Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), the esteemed court composer serving Emperor Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor (Jeffrey Jones). Respected and disciplined, Salieri believes his devotion to God has earned him a place as a vessel for divine music.

However, his faith is shaken when the young prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) arrives at court. Far from the dignified genius Salieri expected, Mozart is irreverent, childish, and crude—yet possesses an extraordinary, seemingly effortless musical brilliance that surpasses anything Salieri could ever achieve.

Consumed by jealousy and spiritual turmoil, Salieri begins a psychological descent, unable to reconcile Mozart’s divine gift with his own mediocrity. His admiration turns into obsession, and eventually into a destructive desire to undermine the very man whose talent he both reveres and resents. As the line between devotion and vengeance blurs, Salieri is driven toward actions that could seal both their fates forever.
