Mario Draghi is an Italian economist and statesman who served as Prime Minister of Italy from 13 February 2021 until 22 July 2022. Internationally respected for his leadership during periods of economic crisis, Draghi is best known for his role as President of the European Central Bank and for leading a technocratic national unity government in Italy.
Mario Draghi was born on 3 September 1947 in Rome, Italy, as the son of Carlo Draghi and Gilda Mancini. He graduated from Sapienza University of Rome in 1976 and completed his doctorate in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology the same year.
Between 1981 and 1991, Draghi served as a professor at the University of Florence. From 1984 to 1990, he worked as an Executive Director at the World Bank. In 1991, he was appointed Director General of the Italian Treasury, a position he held until 2001. During this period, he played a central role in reforming Italian corporate and financial legislation and chaired committees responsible for revising company law and regulating Italian financial markets.
After leaving the Treasury, Mario Draghi worked in the private sector. From 2002 to 2005, he served as Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Goldman Sachs, where he was also a member of the firm-wide management committee.
Draghi returned to public service in 2006, becoming Governor of the Bank of Italy on 16 January 2006, a position he held until 31 October 2011. Simultaneously, he served as Chairman of the Financial Stability Board from 2 April 2006 to 4 November 2011. On 1 November 2011, he was appointed President of the European Central Bank, a role he held until 31 October 2019. His tenure at the ECB was widely credited with stabilizing the eurozone during the sovereign debt crisis.
Following the resignation of Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on 26 January 2021, Mario Draghi was appointed by President Sergio Mattarella on 2 February 2021 to form a technocratic government. With the support of a broad coalition of right- and left-wing parties, he established a national unity government and was sworn in as Prime Minister on 13 February 2021.
Draghi’s premiership focused on economic recovery, institutional reform, and managing the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. On 22 July 2022, he submitted his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella, bringing his term as Prime Minister to an end.
Mario Draghi married Maria Serenella Cappello in 1973. The couple have two children, Federica Draghi and Giacomo Draghi.
