John Ratcliffe became the 9th Director of the Central Intelligence Agency on January 23, 2025, following his nomination by U.S. President Donald Trump after Trump’s second inauguration as President of the United States. His appointment was confirmed by a vote of the United States Senate on the same date.



John Ratcliffe, whose full name is John Lee Ratcliffe, was born on October 20, 1965, in Mount Prospect, Illinois, as the youngest of six children in his family. He completed his secondary education at Carbondale Community High School in Illinois. In 1987, he earned a bachelor’s degree in government and international studies from University of Notre Dame. He later received his Juris Doctor degree in 1989 from the Dedman School of Law at Southern Methodist University.

After graduating from law school, John Ratcliffe worked as an attorney in private practice until 2004. His legal career laid the foundation for his later roles in public service and federal law enforcement.

John Ratcliffe entered public office in Texas, serving as Mayor of Heath, Texas, from 2004 to 2012. During this period, he was also appointed Interim United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, a position he held from May 2007 to April 2008.

In 2014, John Ratcliffe was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he represented Texas’s 4th congressional district. He served in Congress until 2020 and was widely regarded as one of the most conservative members during his tenure. From 2015 to 2020, he was an active member of the House, participating in key legislative and oversight functions.

During the first presidency of Donald Trump, John Ratcliffe was appointed as the sixth Director of National Intelligence. He served in this role from May 26, 2020, until January 20, 2021, overseeing the United States intelligence community during a period marked by heightened national security challenges.

Following Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, John Ratcliffe was once again nominated for a senior intelligence position. On January 23, 2025, after a Senate confirmation vote, he officially assumed office as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, becoming the ninth individual to lead the organization.

John Ratcliffe is married to Michele Ratcliffe. The couple has two children, Riley Ratcliffe and Darby Ratcliffe.
