Story Overview
The Goldfinch tells the haunting story of a young boy who steals an invaluable work of art from a museum after losing his mother in a tragic terrorist attack. Thirteen-year-old Theodore Decker’s life is shattered when his mother is killed during a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the chaos that follows, Theo impulsively takes a priceless painting known as The Goldfinch.
From the day of the explosion onward, the small portrait of a chained goldfinch becomes the only tangible connection Theodore has to his mother. As he grows older, the painting turns into both a source of comfort and a heavy burden, shaping his emotional journey as he struggles with grief, guilt, and identity.
After the attack, thirteen-year-old Theodore “Theo” Decker is left alone in the world. Traumatised and emotionally adrift, he clings to a fragile sense of hope embodied by the stolen artwork. The painting silently accompanies him through foster homes, distant cities, and turbulent relationships, becoming a symbol of survival as well as obsession.
