Plot Summary

Reality Bites centers on Lelaina Pierce (Winona Ryder), a sharp, idealistic young woman working as an assistant on a morning television show. While navigating the compromises of her day job, Lelaina spends her free time filming raw, often brutally honest documentaries about her inner circle—her outspoken and eccentric roommate Vickie (Janeane Garofalo), the sexually repressed and insecure Sammy (Steve Zahn), and her closest friend, the intelligent yet emotionally distant rebel Troy (Ethan Hawke).

Lelaina’s uncompromising vision attracts the attention of Michael Grates (Ben Stiller), a confident executive in the emerging video media industry who wants to broadcast her work on his channel, In Your Face TV. What initially appears to be a career breakthrough soon reveals itself as a clash between authenticity and commercialization, as Lelaina struggles with how much of her voice she is willing to sacrifice for success.
