Memento (2001)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Memento is a gripping psychological thriller that follows Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), a man driven by a single purpose: to find the person responsible for the brutal attack that left his wife dead. Leonard lives a peculiar life—wearing expensive suits, driving a sleek Jaguar, staying in cheap motels, and paying for everything in cash—while obsessively pursuing the truth behind his wife’s murder.

Leonard suffers from a rare condition that prevents him from forming new memories. Although he clearly remembers everything that happened before the accident that caused his condition, he cannot retain new information for more than a few minutes. Realizing the limits of his mind, Leonard creates a system to guide himself: he tattoos important facts on his body, writes notes in notebooks and on cards, and takes Polaroid photographs to document people and events.

Despite these strategies, Leonard’s search for the truth becomes increasingly complicated. His fragmented memory makes it difficult to distinguish allies from enemies, forcing him to rely on strangers whose intentions he cannot fully judge. As Leonard moves through a maze of clues and half-remembered encounters, the line between truth, manipulation, and self-deception begins to blur. Memento stands out for its innovative reverse narrative structure and its exploration of memory, identity, and the fragile nature of truth.
