Story Overview

Set in a grim, undefined future shaped by the aftermath of war, Delicatessen unfolds inside a crumbling apartment building where food has become more precious than life itself. In this desperate world, a resourceful former circus performer arrives to work for a butcher whose shop somehow continues to provide the building’s tenants with rare cuts of meat.

At first, the new job seems like a stroke of luck. But as the young man begins to uncover the horrifying truth behind the butcher’s business, survival becomes his only concern. Realizing that he may be next on the menu, he is forced into a frantic struggle against a brutal landlord armed with a cleaver and protected by a grotesque system of fear, hunger, and dependency.

Blending macabre humor, romance, and dystopian fantasy, the film turns its bizarre premise into a visually inventive story about love, resistance, and human appetite at its most monstrous. With help from the butcher’s daughter and an underground band of vegetarian rebels, escape may still be possible—but only if he can stay alive long enough to fight back.
